Wedding Reception Emcee

One key factor in making your reception a success is a good emcee. A good emcee must be able to speak well, and interact with the guests. He or she must also know well the couple and and be well-versed in the couple's story and background.

A good emcee is involved in the conceptualization of the reception program. He should coordinate closely with the couple and their wedding planner. The emcee must be interested in the wedding details and enthusiastic to be part of the wedding.

Furthermore, a good emcee, must of course be energetic but not annoying. He/She must know the right amount of energy to emanate, especially, if the couple wants to have a solemn, formal reception. On the other hand, the emcee must be bubbly enough to up the ante for the reception of couples who want to have a fun, lively night.

Some emcees think that a loud shrill voice, or shouting equals to energy. NOT! TRUE! A good emcee knows how to modulate his voice well, and determine the balance for him/her to be heard loud enough by the entire room.

So before hiring that emcee, ask for recommendations, or referrals. Ask for a sample video, if he/she has one. And of course, converse with him/her so you will know if he/she knows who to speak well, and interact.

A good emcee for one wedding might cause a disaster in another so pick well.

Flowers Checklist

Flowers set the tone and mood of weddings. Ugly flowers or flower arrangements can make or break a wedding. Flowers adorn everything from the bride and groom to the entourage, the car, the church, and the reception venue. It ties up all the design elements and highlights the color motif.

When hiring a florist, make sure he/she will take care of these things:
Wedding Entourage
  • Bride's bouquet
  • Bride's headpiece
  • Groom's boutonierre
  • Sponsors' corsages
  • Parents' corsages
  • Maid of Honor and Bridesmaids bouquets
  • Best Man and Groomsmen's boutonierres
  • Flower girls headpiece and basket
  • Ring, Coin, and Bible Bearers' buotonierres

Church
  • Aisle decor
  • Pew decor
  • Altar arrangements

Reception Venue
  • Welcome table
  • Entrance arrangements
  • Presidential table centerpiece
  • Couple and Sponsors' chairs decor
  • Guests' tables centerpiece
  • Buffet table's arrangements
  • Cake table's arrangements

Bridal Car

Your florist must also be aware of the palette of colors used by your couturier and cake maker. He/She must also keep in mind the theme and motif of the wedding. The florist must have same taste as yours as to avoid clashing styles and design philosophies.

Early on, you must already know what other design elements you want your florist to incorporate into his arrangements. Do you want balloons, an ice sculpture, or live animals in the venue? Do you want everything in rich, lavish set-ups, or do you prefer minimal set-ups? You must also indicate if you want to have specific flowers in the arrangements, and whether you prefer local or imported flowers.

For some weddings, vines, shrubs, small trees, and other plants in pots add great aesthetic to the over all look of the wedding. Tell your florist if you want more green to your wedding.

Here in Davao City, it's possible to buy fresh exotic flowers at cheap prices from some vendors in Marilog District. There are also cheap but definitely nice flowers in the Bangkerohan and Agdao markets. You may opt to buy the flowers yourself and just have a freelance florist or designer help you out with the set-up and arrangements.

Bonguyan - Monton Pre-Nuptial Photos

I spent most of today assisting in the pre-nuptial photo shoot for the Bonguyan - Monton nuptials. The official photos were taken by Roy Oliveros. My cousin Brian (the best man), and I also took some photos. Hair styling and make up were done by Mharu Lao.

Here are some of the photos I took.

Can you guess where these photos were taken?

Pre-Nuptial Photos

Wedding invitations and announcements are sometimes designed with photos of the couple in matching clothes, frolicking somewhere being all sweet and malambing to each other. And during the wedding itself, more pictures are shown sometimes in tarpaulin form decked outside or inside the venue. And even more photos are shown in the giant screen for everyone to see.

These are not the couple's stock photos. After all, what kind of couple brings a photographer to their romantic dates?

Most photographers and studios include a Pre-Nuptial Shoot as part of their wedding photography package. Here in Davao City, the most popular venues for Pre-Nuptial Shoots are Chema's Resort and Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Samal Island, Eden Nature Park, and Loleng's Garden Resort.

Tomorrow, I am going to a secret, private location somewhere in the boondocks to assist in my client's Pre-Nuptial Photo Shoot with photographer Roy Oliveros. Aside from the couple and I, the best man will also be on hand to assist, as well as the bride's make-up artist and hair stylist, Maru.

Most couples wear matching white outfits to their Pre-Nuptial Shoot. I find that quite boring and common, so I asked the couple to bring lots of clothing options, mostly plain bright and pastel shirts and tops in matching colors. Since it is an outdoor, mountain setting, I advised the groom against wearing collared shirts that would look too formal or out of place.

I am also hoping for a sunny day. :)

Wedding Entourage

Principal Sponsors

For the typical Filipino wedding, here's the usual composition of the wedding entourage:
  • Principal Sponsors / Ninongs and Ninangs
  • Secondary Sponsors: Candle Sponsors, Veil Sponsors, Cord Sponsors
  • Best Man and Maid or Matron of Honor
  • Bridesmaids
  • Groomsmen / Ushers
  • Flower Girls
  • Ring Bearer, Coin Bearer, and Bible Bearer

Ring BearerFlower Girls

The Principal Sponsors are usually composed of 3 - 5 pairs of the couple's parents friends, mentors, senior business associates, employees, and other personalities who are considerably older than the couple, and plays or have played a significant part in the couple's life, separately or together. I think it is best to keep the number of the principal sponsors to 1 - 5% of the entire guest list. So unless you have 1,000 guests, please don't have 25 pairs of principal sponsors.

The Secondary Sponsors are friends of the couple who would like to be part of the entourage, but don't have much time to help out with the preparations. Most of the time, the secondary sponsors are also couples themselves.

The Best Man is handpicked by the groom from among his brothers or closest friends. He is primarily tasked to organize the bachelor party, assist the groom on the wedding day, and holds the bride's ring during the ceremony. During the reception, the best man usually gives a toast. He also makes sure that the Groomsmen/Ushers have their attire ready, and know their tasks.

Similarly, the bride handpicks her Maid of Honor from among her sisters or closest friends. The Maid of Honor is called the Matron of Honor is she is already married. She has to organize the bridal shower, help the bride in choosing her bridal gown, and those of the maid of honor, and the bridesmaids. She also helps the bride prepare on the wedding day, and hold the groom's ring. The maid of honor is sometimes asked to give a toast during the reception. She also makes sure that the bridesmaids are all prepared and ready. It is usually the bride who pays for her maid of honor's dress.

Groomsman and BridesmaidBridesmaids

Groomsmen are usually brothers, female cousins, and friends of the bride and groom. There should be about 5 groomsmen or ushers. They are usually 16 years old or older. They help the best man co-host the bachelor party, and help the groom prepare during the day. They also help out in ushering the guests during both the ceremony and the reception.

The Bridesmaids and Junior Bridesmaids are usually the sisters, female cousins, and friends of the bride and groom. It is best to keep the number to about 5 bridesmaids and 3 junior bridesmaids. The junior bridesmaids are around 13 - 15 years old, while bridesmaids are at least 16 years old. Junior bridesmaids may or may not have partners. Bridesmaids assist the maid of honor in hosting the bridal shower. They also assist the bride during the ceremony and the reception. During the reception, they may man the receiving area. They also assist in distributing giveaways. The bride may or may not pay for the dresses of the bridesmaids and junior bridesmaids.

The Ring, Coin, and Bible Bearers are usually eight years old or younger. They each carry a pillow while walking down the aisle during the ceremony.

The Flower Girls drop flower petals down the aisle during the ceremony.
